Raison d’être

Thursday, March 17th, 2011

Well it certainly has been a while since I last posted.  I have no excuses so I’ll just get right back into the good stuff.

I started this blog for a few reasons, the most selfish one was that I wanted to have an indelible record of my flying.  Not just a log of hours and aircraft types but of the actual feeling of what one experiences while going into flight training and beyond.  I get really detailed in my flight posts (almost to the point of boredom I wonder) but I do this because I would love to be an old man telling these stories to my own grandson.  In turn the posts are intimate and expose a bit more of my thoughts then one might do publicly.

The second reason is that I want to be an ambassador to general aviation.  I believe firmly that these aircraft serve an important and vital role to the spirit of man.  I hoped that by publishing my ‘secrets’ as it were that someday, someone could read what I had gone through and it might help them get through the same thing.

My thanks so far have been many, such as when you post comments and offer me sound advices.  (Thanks cannot be said enough to Tony or David for their shared spirit and graciousness) and I have slowly made inroads into the airport subculture but I recently was lit up in am amazing way when a young lad who was nearing his own flight test leaned over my desk to say, “hey you have a blog right?”  ”Yes.”  ”Well thanks, it helped me to read some of the stuff you went though when I was going through it myself.”   I almost fell onto the floor!  What a great compliment to receive.

That really truly made my day.   It also made me realize that I should post more often…….

Flying with Mentors

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

Mentors are important in our lives.   With most knowledge you can buy the basics but to gain true wisdom is priceless.  This applies to business and certainly applies to flying.  You get to a point where you know all you can “buy” but still don’t know a whole lot.  Then you go and gain experience, with experience comes wisdom.  Mentors just make the process faster and a lot more interesting.

One of my flying mentors is a gentleman named David who has stuck with me through apprehensive early PPL time, offered me frozen fingers while we did a “pre-buy” inspection on the ramp of a Piper Cherokee at 0 degrees!  Most recently allowed me to fly his aircraft from the left seat. David has an IFR certification and is able to fly in clouds.  Here is a video clip that shows the kind of experience I can get flying with him.

Thank you David.  I know I owe you for one broken vent window, don’t let that keep us from flying together soon!

(Jeanne, the link to the video is here, in case it doesn’t open in your browser.)

Bell Canada is still taking my money . . .

Friday, November 5th, 2010

I went to the mailbox last week to find an envelope that had “Bell” in the return address.  What could this be?  They surely couldn’t be sending me an apology letter could they?  Nope!  It was a bill, for $1.86 which is apparently their “late payment fee”.  I have never seen this before as my payments are always on time.  Imagine my surprise!  I had paid the full and final bill almost 2 months ago, I guess they just needed to milk another dollar out of this tired Canadian. The Pursuit of Happiness

Friday, November 5th, 2010

I used to think that life was about being successful, but then I became quite successful and realized I was wrong.  I thought life was about money, until I made a ton of money and realized I was wrong about that too.

I might be wrong again but it’s my blog so……

Life, it seems is made up of moments and how we feel about them or react to them is what determines how our life actually IS.  Think about that for a moment.  If someone told me that their puppy died, in that moment I would feel sad for that person’s grave loss yet happy that the loss was not my own.   I have started to unravel this a bit and realized that the puppy analogy applies to all sorts of things in life.

For any given situation there are generally two ways you can feel about things, happy or sad.  Since happy is always better than sad, why not choose that route the most often?  I’m not advocating that we all stop caring about our friends pets but that we just make a conscious decision to CHOOSE be HAPPY more often.  That’s what life is really about.  Those moments that made us feel the best.  It’s not really the moment, but what we decided to feel at that time that defines it.

Look at that folks, a scientist talking about the spirit here!   I better get back to flying…

Was there a time in your life that you chose to be happy?  What about times you chose to be sad, if you had to do it over again would you make the SAME choice?  Post a comment and share.

Ma Bell, rot in hell

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

I used to love her, then I got to know her.

All Canadians have to deal with the megalopolies now and then.  If you want to have a phone, internet or mobile anything you pretty much have to sign in blood and give away a bit of your soul in doing so.  My blood has been shed on cellular phone bills since 1999 when I signed up for a Cantel/Rogers deal costing a mild $1 per minute weekdays and a bit less on weekends.  My bills were roughly $200 a month then.  When that phone died I went on a romantic journey with Fido that spanned 4-5 years and a lot of technology changes.  Somewhere in 2004 I fell in love with Windows mobile and bought a two phone package from Bell on a three year term.  Total cost with everything I could imagine for both phones?  About $200 monthly.  I paid it dutifully for 6 years (renewing the contract once) until one day I decided it was time for iPhones, one for the missus and one for me.   That journey began May 13th and has caused me to age at least 5 years since. Assembly of Japanese bicycle require great peace of mind

Friday, March 12th, 2010

The title of this post relates to a line in Robert Pirsig’s excellent “Zen And The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance“.   Which is known somewhat as a must read for anyone seeking higher knowledge.  In the book he relates to how much easier it is to perform a task if your mind is clear of “clutter”.

You know the voices you hear in your head, sometimes doubting, sometimes encouraging but rarely shutting up.  They can get in the way of pure enjoyment of life.  They can also get in the way of pure control of a machine like an Airplane.

You can take these concepts a bit further reading www.pilotpsy.com which is an excellent resource for taking your airmanship to the next level.   This is not beginner “Stick and Rudder” type of stuff so be warned, it’s a how-to of a completely different sort.

In a nutshell for my next flight, I  intend on becoming completely enveloped in the moment of it all.  Still remaining as far ahead of the aircraft as I can, but being entirely involved in the whole thing.  The experience or the essence if you will, of man touching the sky.  I’ll not let the thoughts of normal ground pounding life interfere with the spirit of the flight.

I expect overall to feel an improvement of the smoothness and “feel” of the entire thing.   Only time will tell.

Today is a very special day in the history of flight.  My flight history that is.  Today marks our One Year Anniversary!   Since Rica and I have had all aviation related events surrounding our wedding, I found it only fitting that we book a flight for 8:00 this morning.  (I originally had something much cooler planned, that never worked out)

I did not feel great getting up at 6:30 to check the weather.  Soon things cheered me up as I realized how gorgeous this morning would be for flying.  It was. You can see how still the air was by the glassy water photo above.

Amazon.ca = Fail

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

So after last month’s tirade of emails regarding www.amazon.ca’s ongoing customer service failure I was ready to give up entirely.  I sincerely thought that my blog posting would light a fire under their keisters.   I sent them the link and noticed shortly thereafter in my statistics that I had a visit or two from the amazon.com domain.  Interesting, the fire was burning but how hot did it need to be?

Never Battle with an Amazon

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

I read, a LOT.  I actually give credit to books for making me the person I am today.  I didn’t go to university, I went to the school of “hard knocks”.  It worked.  Today I’m successful all because of books.  I’ve spent many an afternoon at the local Chapter’s store but prefer to buy all my books online at Indigo as they offer great discounts and free shipping.   Recently I was asked to complete a survey and was given the equivalent of $36 CDN as a gift certificate for Amazon.ca.  The other online vendor.  Having not used amazon for years I figured why not, and they had Rod Machado’s IFR manual which I really was interested in.

So on January 19th the order was placed.  2 books totaling $41.12.  $36 from the gift cert and $5.12 from my Visa.  Within a day I received an email confirming the shipped books.  Excellent!  This sounds like a good company so far.   That was the last good thing I can say about this company that has effectively stolen my money and provided nothing but grief since.

Looking Inward

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

I was perusing my daughter’s Facebook account when I found a posting from her regarding a Johari window.   I took the bait and ended up creating one for myself.  It’s a great tool for having a look inward by seeing what others think of you.  Have a look below to see what I mean.  If you know me, feel free to contribute to my Johari window.
