Aircraft: C172
Registration: C-GQUO

I have done a couple of flights that I need to blog about still but this one was of particular interest to me and therefore I’ll do this a bit out of sequence.  If you see some other flights pop up on your RSS feed it’s true,  I backdated them.

So the day was perfect.  Clear skies, cold air and the aircraft was ready with half tanks for my heavy load.  After last week’s flights which were perfect in clear air and in QQV I was confident that todays flight would be great.  I had been keeping my flights pretty tame with my first few passengers. They were short and more or less involved flying outbound for 10 minutes or so, performing a very shallow turn then returning for landing.

Flying with Friends

I am trying something new with this posting.  Video finally makes it to my blog!  This is a video of the landing I made while flying with my friends this weekend.  It was both of their second time in a small aircraft and the weather was excellent.  I hope you like the video!

This morning I looked to the sky to see a grey mass of ugly.  I seriously did not think we would get to fly, certainly not to Lachute as I had planned on Friday.   The plan today was to take our friend Jenny up for her first general aviation flight ever.  Rica called to relay the bad news, we probably couldn’t go anywhere.  Jenny was so excited that she was not disappointed as long as we could fly somewhere.  Since the ceilings were high enough and the visibility was actually pretty good.  I decided we should be ok to go.

If you were to fly for the first time as PIC with your wife on board, you would BEG for a day like today.  Take a look at that METAR!    Today was my day.  Rica had an appointment to have her hair done this morning so I took the opportunity to go to the club and have Simon sign off on my paperwork.  (For any prospective flight test candidates you didn’t hear it from me but Simon loves a small tea from Tim Horton’s accompanied by a chocolate chip muffin.)  I brought a medium!

Lesson 51: Back to the Bumps

Aircraft:        C172
Registration:  C-GBRI
Dual Time:     0.9    Total:  34.0
Solo Time:     0.0    Total:  7.0

This morning I was scheduled for an 08:00 solo in GBRI.  For some reason when I arrived at the aerodrome my booking had been moved over to GQUO.  QUO is a great aircraft but it has been years since I was at her controls.  Strike #1.  Next I checked the weather, a 7 KT wind directly from the North was blowing across the runway.  I am certified for 7 KT but that is my limit so far.  Strike #2.  Then as I was asking an instructor to sign me out he demanded to know the “numbers” so I went back to verify that I was correct about the 7 KT wind, at the same time I overheard people talking about me or at least my plane in French.  Since I don’t speak French I hate when people do that!  I knew it was about me but I did not know what it was, Strike #3.   To me if there are three reasons not to fly before you even get off the ground, you stay on the ground. So I offered “Hey do you guys need QUO?  I’m not going to go”.  They seemed taken aback by my suggestion but I clarified that I already had another booking for 11:00 anyways and would just come back then.  (Secretly I was relieved to not have to go flying in the crosswind)
